Conversation with Bahc Yi-so, 2003

Since the mid 1980s, Bahc Yiso and I have been friends while we were both living in Brooklyn. In the summer of 2003, I did an artist residency at Ssamzie art space and Bahc Yiso and I found time to have lunch together, then afterwards we went around the corner and had coffee in Insadong. I was working on a project that involved me carrying around my video camera, to interview various people, particularly migrant workers who were the subject of my project. When we went upstairs at the coffee shop, I was delighted to be in a room that had a narrow strip of mirrors all around us. I was captivated by the mirrors so I set up the camera on the table and started to capture Yiso reflected by the mirrors while we talked. The informal conversation wasn’t as important to me as the visuals were at the time. —Excerpted from an email conversation with Yong Soon Min, May, 2020
